Re: More American Expatriates Give Up Citizenship

Some people are doing it for economic opportunity, but not me, since I already make a six figure salary in the banking industry with full benefits and local business/political connections. I am apart of that "good ol' boy" network most people spend years trying to break into. That's a lot to leave behind. On top of that, I can only speak English. Tell me, what financial opportunities could possibly be waiting for me outside the States that I don't already have? Go ahead, tell me. So I guess we're back to lifestyle and cultural reasons.

i'll give you the abridged version, some people love to experience different cultures/lifestyles AND make the six figure salary/make an international career while living comfortably.

I've often said that I would leave if only I could figure out a way to make a living in one of the places I would want to live in.

Re: More American Expatriates Give Up Citizenship

American expatriates are fast becoming the world's financial refugees. Onerous legislation from the U.S. government is making it too difficult – and too expensive – for banks to service U.S. citizens that live abroad. Expats are being left with a fast diminishing range of options. An increasing number are taking the most drastic step and renouncing their citizenship.

According to U.S. government figures, twice as many Americans renounced their citizenship in the last quarter of 2009 than in the whole of 2008. The numbers are still only in the hundreds but are expected to rise now that the HIRE Act has been signed. Ms. Hart says the last time she checked it was not possible to get an appointment at the U.S. embassy in London to renounce citizenship until 2012. In Bern, you couldn't get an appointment until June next year.

Why would the HIRE Act cause an increase? I don't get it. HIRE is just tax incentives for hiring people?

I agree 100%. I personally have considered relocating for years.. different cultures/lifestyles, etc.. Sydney, Australia has been on my horizon for years to be honest, ever since I went there in 2000.. We have an office there too :) But now that i'm married I don't see that happening.... at least not right now! lol

I would consider moving again, but I would never give up my citizenship! Fuck that...no matter what? The US is my home and I LOVE IT HERE, even with all its defects!!!

Expats being treated like pariahs by international banks doesn't seem like an argument in favor of expatriation.
