I'm happy to hear that TNL has gone back to brightening your day, although I'm dismayed that schadenfreude over watching me get pummeled is what amuses you.

The LAST thing that Dade needs is to open himself up to the kind of criticism that I have to deal with, by posting his URL. You guys are a tough audience man...

Ryan wrote:About five years ago you told me a bunch of things that I made the mistake of believing. It was complete vapor. You told me about VIP hosts taking bottle orders with PDAs and all kinds of other stuff that was just vapor. That hurt your credibility more than I harmed any company's credibility by openly admitting that TNL was a skunk works project and not a priority. If you can't even figure out who owns TNL, and I can't either, then I'm not harming their reputation by anything that I say. Much less by being honest and avoiding vaporware announcements that I know that I can't back up with reality.

My talent is making ideas into reality. Not spouting PR.

Everything I told you was in place and in the process of being executed. The owner simply ran out of money. His "real" business went belly-up before Nocturnal was completed and that was that. It was a miricle I got that place open at all. The bottle delivery system exists and would have been working had he not shorted the elevator company. The wireless ordering system is probably still sitting in the basement somewhere and would have worked had he been able to make the payments to Micros. You get the idea. If you held that against my credibility, you really have some issues and zero understanding of the business world. You see, Ryan, I was an employee, hired to do a specific job. If the project falls short due to undercapitalization, that's someone else's responsibility. I did manage to get the place open despite the fact that he couldn't pay the contractor, (who I negotiated a $1 milloion interest free loan from), the sound company, (who I got to complete the job because of my personal relationship), and many more.

Am I supposed to know what you're talking about?

I do get the idea, yes. My VIP reservation gizmo is real, it's not vapor. It handled a few hundred bottle reservations at multiple clubs in Vegas this week. My guest list gizmo is real too, not vapor. Thousands of entries this week. You get the idea. I make promises that I can keep and I don't make promises unless I can. And that includes people downstream of me. If you only knew the story about what I was pressured to deliver today but I knew that I couldn't because of a subcontractor who I wasn't confident could deliver. I didn't make the promise. My worst fears came true. My credibility is intact even though the subcontractor's isn't.

I'll clarify for the record since the week is officially over: TNL was a skunk works project until this week. Two major events happened this week that make it more of a priority, one of them was Venue Driver going beta today. I'll graciously accept your advice to stop talking about it like it's a skunk works project.

I hereby offer my thanks to you, Honky, Coach, and everybody else who is hard on us. We need the feedback.

I hope they understood why things went they way they did, now.

We honestly took your suggestions, and very shortly we'll have time to act on them.

wow just read through the conversations of 8/15.

goddamn ryan, you are a stubborn sonofabitch. i'm sure this isn't the first time you've heard it. stubborness can be both a benefit and a detriment...but you always have to be vigilant of the line being crossed between the two.

dade, i agree with all of the points you made...very observant and very accurate.

TNL only exists in the first place because I was stubborn, rememeber? But yes I agree, often a detriment. Thanks for the advice. Dade was right.

Part of the point of the design of this particular site is that it doesn't encourage sycophants. I need accurate feedback. Thanks.

We're always glad to accept advice on TNL, the trick is to present it in such a way that it gets our attention.

A lot of people have the mistaken assumption that we're in the business of making a 3.0 version of the blue site downstairs. We're not.
