The kids love it because their parents aren't on it.

There, I said it. In five years, after this has all blown up, AGAIN, I can pull a Slamminshaun and necropost this thread showing how smart I am.

Re: Snapchat potentially worth 1 billion dollars.

How hard is it to build an app like Snapchat?

Are these apps built on open source code?

Do they run on Amazon Web Services?

How much does developing something like that cost?

Re: Snapchat potentially worth 1 billion dollars.

Most of them are based on open-source concepts, yes.

A developer of say, Tech's caliber could probably kick out a Snapchat clone in about six weeks.

The code is not the valuable part. YouTube and Instagram are both really simple, technically speaking. They have value because of the user base that they built. Same thing with Snapchat.

Re: Snapchat potentially worth 1 billion dollars.

I think Kamen wants to finance the build-out of a dumb, yet addicting app, and ride off into the sunset.

Re: Snapchat potentially worth 1 billion dollars.

Well, it's the marketing that matters as much as the app.

Vine, for example, asks you to rate the app after you click 'like' on a video. That pre-filters the people rating the app, to people who are having a good experience. It takes a hundred key decisions like that along with good engineering, along with sheer dumb luck, to make an app go viral.
