Re: Should I move to Miami?

Moving here then moving back is not an option unless your 21 years of age with no direction in life. Miami is not for everyone.

I am actually looking into DC/Northern VA because of my security clearance and the pay up there is much more. Moving down here may be a mistake as in the wages are not comparable and your immediate family may suffer from lack of an abundance of good schools and infrastructure.

We are currently around no. 2 or 3 in unemployment. You have to think that moving here may be a good move at first but if things fall through in your job, the uphill battle to get back on your feet is much harder here than up north.

Don't let the sun and beach fool you. If you make enough money you can come on vacation. But coming down to live requires serious thinking over and not just come down because of the sun and fun. Trust me- I have been in the system with a family.

But, just as beathead enjoys, you may also as well. It just depends on where you are going in life and how much hustling is in your tank. Come down and see for yourself by actually visiting frequently to get a feel for it.

I love the place and everything it has to offer. I can make up to 80k more if i move up north. And some dudes i know making 90k up north will have to settle for 40k here working in the same government agency....

Re: Should I move to Miami?

You people need to stop lumping the rest of Florida in with Miami...

I live 15 miles from Miami but I might as well live on the moon it's so different.. There are so many great towns in Florida but your avg Miami person can't name you anything outside of Tampa and Orlando..

Example, Sarasota is a great little town. Plenty to do, cool beach scene, affordable etc...

If you want to come to Miami to party then knock yourself out but if you plan on growing up and starting a family I'd look elsewhere in Florida, but Florida is still a great place to live.

There is no story telling here. No one is saying not to come- but you need to make hard decisions on not base your move on great little town and cool beach scene.... which is what got people into this mess in the first place.

"A lot of people who moved to Florida to work during the construction boom were unskilled workers, and it's just very hard for those folks to find new work," said Mark Vitner, a senior economist with Wells Fargo.

"Manufacturing in the country is doing great," said Hank Fishkind, a central Florida economist and head of Fishkind & Associates. "Unfortunately, in Florida most of our manufacturing is related to the housing industry: concrete blocks, door frames, milling, that kind of stuff … And our manufacturing is not going to recover until our housing recovers."

Lost government jobs: Local and state governments in hard-hit states like Florida are under the most pressure to cut jobs and slash services in hopes of balancing their budgets.

Lower average wages: Many of the newly created jobs pay less than the ones lost. Florida has lost construction, government and financial services jobs while it gained a little ground in retail, tourism and health care (primarily lower-paid home health aides and clinic workers).

Trapped in a vicious cycle: With a higher unemployment rate than most states, many Floridians have less disposable income to spend at restaurants and shops. Those businesses then require fewer employees. That forces some to lay off workers or to close. Which leads to more unemployed.

I would not jump into the Miami real estate market without any experience here. You are going to get pwned by people who have been doing it here for many years, with a much better understanding of the market. Do you already work in real estate?

I looked up Accenture, seems like a nice corporate gig, if being a cubicle-monkey is your thing. If you have a big offer from them, why would you turn it down?
