Pictures from the past of Sobe and Downtown

Image

Photo of South Beach taken on or around 1910 looking northwest from about where Washington Avenue and Lincoln Road is. In the background you can see Belle Isle (where the Venetian Causeway passes through today) and the Miami mainland out further in the distance.

Image

1907 view of Downtown Miami from the Royal Palm Hotel looking north. Nothing in this photo exists today.

Image

1897, Miami Avenue under construction with drenches for plumbing. Blacksmith's shop in the background.

I agree. I can't even imagine how it must have been living here back then. I mean, there's the heat and such, but the mosquitos must have been murder. And everybody wearing wool and jackets. Those were some tough badasses.

I was thinking the same thing, those people that worked hard in those days to make a city out of this place deserve more credit then what was given. Henry Flagler seems to have gotten all the credit for funding a lot of the places built in what is Miami now.

But, I can imagine so many others risked just as much as he did and never got the credit for it. Those business owners that came down to South Florida to make a new life, the construction workers, masons, blacksmiths and so on. People tend to forget how new the majority of the cities in Florida are aside from St Augustine.

Well I'd imagine the mosquito's weren't as bad due a few factors. Fewer live stock, no man made stagnate water, and abundant fish populations..

Those pictures remind me why Back to the Future 3 was the best... Something about the old west that just is cool as shit.. Maybe it's gun fights, whiskey, brothels and no Cubans..

Haha.

That being said, download and check out the latest version of Google Earth. It has a timeline slider where you can go back and forth in time and see areas as they were up to twenty years ago. It's a fun trick when you position it over Downtown Miami.

Seriously, how kick ass would Miami have been if the Cubans didn't leave Cuba? It would rival NYC, no doubt in my mind...

Masters don't give orders;
they work with everybody else.

Would it? Miami kind of trucked along at a pretty languid pace until the 1970s when a lot of Latins showed up. Until then it was just a vacation city for people from up north.
