The Miami Herald's food truck Fridays!

The Miami Herald has convinced all of the gourmet food trucks in town to park in their parking lot the first Friday of each month. It's totally awesome. I just had a jerk chicken sandwich from one truck, a fish taco from another, and bread pudding made from Krispy Kreme donuts from a third one. I'm definitely going back every Friday as long as they do it.

BTW, I'm gonna call it now. The Food Truck deal has either already jumped the shark or will soon. The mania is ridiculous for a bunch of cheap kitchens with mostly mediocre food.

It's just fun, Coach. All three of the trucks that my wife and I sampled were maybe four out of five stars when compared to similarly-priced stuff like the Nexxt Cafe or Pasha's or something. I would try more of them more often but I never know where to find them, so it's cool to have them all parked together so I can get to them easily.

I didn't notice Annette but I don't see her very often and there were lots of people there. Might have missed her. I went really early and it's a good thing that I did because those trucks were MOBBED when I was leaving.

Re: The Miami Herald's food truck Fridays!

Jefe's is good, but takes about 100 years to get you their food.

I agree that the food on most of the trucks is quite good, but the mania surrounding the whole food truck trend is just too over-the-top. Once the newness wears off, there really isn't much to recommend them over places like The Daily or Lime or Sakaya Kitchen.

And when it is 99 degrees and 99% humidity for 6 months with people standing in line for 40 minutes and nowhere to sit in the shade, how well do you think that little event is going to fare?

Tech, you can find out where they all are by following them on Twitter, but that is a huge pain in the ass. Fortunately, The Burger Beast has you hooked up. That's the easiest way to do it.

I am not saying that the food truck will die anytime soon, what I am saying is that the mania surrounding them is going to pass quickly. I think we are near the peak, though not quite at it. In a few months, maybe a year, you are going to see them dropping like flies as business tapers off and people go back to their regular routines. I guess I shouldn't say it has jumped the shark quite yet, but it is heading up the ramp.

I actually agree with coach for once. I do not understand the allure of these trucks. Never have, probably never will.

Yeah I don't get the whole food truck thing either. In my experience, it's too pricey and you wait too long for food that is mostly subpar.

Re: The Miami Herald's food truck Fridays!

If you don't get to that Herald thing before noon then you're definitely going to wait in a long line. I'm still going back. I think what appeals to me is that those trucks don't come over to the beach very much so it's a novelty to see even one, much less all of them all at once. Food trucks aren't something you see in a smaller town. It takes an interesting community to be able to line up a gourmet truck, a latin food truck, a burger truck, a Korean food truck, a seafood truck, and a cupcakes/desert truck. When I lived in Silicon Valley I saw lots of food stands and food trucks, but on the Florida side for years the closest thing that I saw to a food truck was the guys with oil drum pork smokers tailgating at Gator games. Miami's version is way more sophisticated. Not quite like California or Manhattan but it's getting interesting.

Re: The Miami Herald's food truck Fridays!

I would highly recommend going to the Street Food Fridays (that's its real name). Like I said, I think the trend will be short-lived, so you might as well ride it while you can! It's a fun way to kill a lunch hour (or two). Do something different. Being that it is only once a month, it gives you a break from whatever you normally do.

Since there are so many there, it is a good chance to try a variety. Go with friends and share.

However, note the *everybody* is saying to get there early, so expect long lines a lot earlier.
