I agree with Norah, once you been to Mexico or been cooked real Mexican food then you would understand her point. Until then, just keep going to El Rancho Grande, if that is what you prefer.

I do understand the point. I've been to Mexico many times. Unfortunately, that is not the point of this thread. Do you think I'm going to jet off to Cuernavaca, grab a bite, and fly back? How is Mexico, LA, or Brooklyn relevant at all to this thread? I was asking about places in Sobe that have opened up in the last year. Technically, El Rancho Grande is not even relevant to this thread. If you want to recommend a great taco cart on Ocean Drive, go right ahead and I'll try it. But mentioning places outside South Beach adds ZERO to this thread.

Thank you my point was validated once again (there is no decent Mexican food in Miami), keep supporting El Rancho Grande if that satisfies your taste buds for quality cheap food in Sobe.

You could have made the same point without the condescending and misplaced bad attitude and it might have been taken seriously. Now you just look like an elitist jerk whose advice is irrelevant.

Norah, where do you suggest instead? I mean, short of going to Mexico? We are talking about Miami, specifically South Beach, but even expanding to all of Miami-Dade. I am always interested in trying someplace new, so I look forward to your suggestions.

Electric Foodie, yes, I've been to Homestead/Redlands many times and they do have some great places. We actually recommended a few on our blog.

Coach in all the years I have been living in FL, I didn't really find anything worth spending the money on for Mexican. Electronic Foodies' suggestions are probably the best ones, it is strange but I guess there isn't enough demand for real homecooked Mexican in South FL.

Did you ever try any of the places in Homestead or the Redlands? There seems to be a large migrant farm worker population there and a *lot* of places that claim to be Mexican food. We have only tried a few, though.

Picnic opened in my neighborhood recently. On Yelp, it has mixed reviews but I am always willing to try something new at least once to form my own opinion. Seems to be predominantly a brunch spot though it is open late evenings on some days.

I got a to go order from Picnic last weekend and I will never be back (I even have a groupon for $15 off that I'd rather let go to waste than eat at Picnic again).

I really wanted to like this place. I think it has a cute pitch and the fact that it got reamed in the New Times made me want to prove them wrong. Among the reasons I won't support this business: the menu items were each at least $2 more costly than advertised online, the bartender tried repeatedly to trick me into the already included 18% tip (on a to go order, remember), one of the items we ordered was left out, and the food was subpar.

We ordered Mac & Cheese spring rolls thinking they would be deliciously indulgent, but the crust was chewy and made of egg roll paper (not at all like a Spring Roll), and the pasta was dried out, like it had been sitting in open air for hours.

If you do want to try Picnic, I think you should do it soon. I picked up my order at 9pm on a Saturday night and there was one customer there. One.

Sorry to quote you T but this is the typical Miami Beach bs, always trying to rip off the customer. Reminds me of my dining experience at Devito's.

It absolutely is so I'm accustomed to looking out for it. I was pretty surprised to see it on a to-go order, though. That's just plain deceitful. When I asked him to remove it, he even told me he didn't know how and gave me $4 cash rather than learn how to operate the POS system.
