Re: Star Wars - The Last Jedi

Saw it yesterday. I will hold off on spoilers and just say I thought it was very average and has made me totally ambivalent about the next movie.

Rogue One was better than both of these installments, imo.

Critics loved it almost unanimously, fans are split (somewhat) down the middle, depending on what poll you believe. I am in the camp of the critics on this one. I loved it. Something to think about....

Fans hated all the prequels almost unanimously.
Fans loved the middle trilogy almost unanimously.
Fans loved Episode 7 almost unanimously.
Fans appear to be split on Episode 8.

I don't think I've ever seen Star Wars fans argue about what makes a Star Wars movie a Star Wars movie as much before, like there's some Star Wars movie rule book LOL. This is fascinating stuff and leads me to think it was done entirely by design. Disney wanted people to argue about it.

So what is the acceptable time frame before we let the spoilers rip? 1 week, 2 weeks? We can argue about it then.

Re: Star Wars - The Last Jedi

This is a really interesting opinion piece on what happened in SW8. LOTS of spoilers in that article.
http://www.slashfilm.com/the-last-jedi-defense/
But with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson wants to burn Star Wars to the ground.

While I think burning Star Wars to the ground is fine, doing it within the Skywalker ennealogy makes no sense. Johnson seems to forget that the Star Wars universe has something like 60,000 years (or possibly much more) of Force-related timeline. This movie series was set in just one tiny portion of it. This article did give a reason for why this movie was so spectacularly unpredictable and and felt rushed in some points.

Anyway, I'll hold off on commenting more until we have passed whatever time threshold is deemed polite for spoilers.

Re: Star Wars - The Last Jedi(SPOILERS)

Well if you are a real Star Wars fan boy, then you should of seen the movie by now

I liked the movie and it was very entertaining and funny at the same time. But the movie left me with a lot of questions that remain unanswered to this moment:

- What is Snoke backstory? How did he end up the Supreme Leader of the First Order?

- Why incorporate so much time into Snoke just to be so easily killed off?

- Who are Reys parents?

- What is the origin of the little boy with the broom at the end of the movie?

I have more questions than that.

I suspect we will never get answers. Not seeing things through is a JJ Abrams trademark. We expected chess. We are getting checkers.

Did you know Emperor Palpatine's backstory after Episodes IV, V, or VI? Did you know he was the Chancellor of the Republic after any of those movies?

- Why incorporate so much time into Snoke just to be so easily killed off?

They really didn't spend much time on him, that's why you have those questions. The middle trilogy was about Vader, not Palpatine. This movie is about the rise of Kylo, not the downfall of Snoke. Everyone thought Snoke would be around for the whole trilogy, because, well, those are the so-called rules of Star Wars movies.

- Who are Reys parents?

The question was answered, unless you think Kylo was lying to her. They're nobody. And at the end of the day, who cares? Why does Finn have to be Lando's kid? Why does Rey have to be a Kenobi? Why does Poe have to be the new Han Solo? Again, that's just more of the so-called rules of Star Wars movies.

- What is the origin of the little boy with the broom at the end of the movie?

By the end of the movie, you should have been saying, "oh, that's right, who cares? He's a nobody who is strong with the force, just like Rey. His parents are probably nobodies too, but again, who cares?."

Re: Star Wars - The Last Jedi

The prequels did away with long-lasting villains. Look how quickly Count Dooku met his demise.

Also unless you go outside of canon, you'll notice they ditch a lot of other things too. Like, there's no Gungans (thank god) wandering around in the sequels. Or any references to Naboo for that matter. Like, a planet that produces such artistry is just stricken from the record.

Then again if you look at the scope of the SW universe, there's tens of thousands of world and trillions upon trillions of beings. It's easy to just say "Yeah, Naboo is still there, but they don't matter much right now..."

I wondered about why Snoke was just a 2-round pushover, but Shaun really put it in the scope of things. Also, remember Snoke is just one guy in a big universe of beings. Force-sensitives aren't infallible and sometimes shit happens.

Re: Star Wars - The Last Jedi

In a world where a show like Game of Thrones exists, I don't know how the story for this ever made it past it's draft phase.

Spoiler alert, stop now if you haven't seen it.

The entire setup was atrocious. Really, full speed ahead until we run out of gas and the bad guys eventually catch us? Wait, in what other movie was fuel ever brought up? SO weak.

Also, Rey's parents are random trailer trash AND we're not going to mention anything about Snoke - oh and LOL enjoy this ridiculous death scene! Cheap.

Codebreaker casino sublot thing? Totally hamfisted. At every turn the director was browbeating us with how so totally COOL he is and how they are "killing the past". Luke Skywalker lightsaber toss? It's not enough he's living on a deserted island, we're going to go all 2017 anticlimactic on your ass. Also hey, we're force talking across a million lightyears of space and LOL put your shirt on Kylo! Cringeworthy.

Flying Leah? ....

There were some amazing scenes and it was entertaining, but critics were clearly paid off to get this thing to 93% on RT.

Movie was made for avocado toast hipsters and unfortunately it worked.
