John McAfee is running for US president as a member of the Libertarian Party. This is an op-ed he wrote and gave us permission to run.

The hack of Mossack Fonseca, in terms of the certain fallout that will affect many of the wealthiest and most prominent people on the planet, is by far the largest and most damaging cyberattack on record.

I am just one of more than 200,000 people to have downloaded the Panama Papers, a record for hacked documents. It was a gold mine.

The release contained 11.5 million documents chronicling the formation and actions of 214,000 offshore companies along with the names and manipulations of more than 14,000 clients. Among the clients are:

12 heads of state
More than 150 politicians
29 billionaires on the Forbes list
Multiple financiers of terrorism
Nuclear-weapons proliferators
Prominent sports and entertainment figures
Numerous CIA-linked companies

I wonder if his virus scanner nagged him every five minutes when he downloaded it.

Re: The Panama Papers

I didn't mention this until after removing this plugin from all inherited venue sites:

A theory on what happened in the Mossack Fonseca breach:

A working exploit for the Revolution Slider vulnerability was published on 15 October 2014 on exploit-db which made it widely exploitable by anyone who cared to take the time. A website like mossfon.com which was wide open until a month ago would have been trivially easy to exploit. Attackers frequently create robots to hit URLs like : http://mossfon.com/wp-content/plugins/r ... se_log.txt

Once they establish that the site is vulnerable from the above URL the robot will simply exploit it and log it into a database and the attacker will review their catch at the end of the day. It’s possible that the attacker discovered they had stumbled across a law firm with assets on the same network as the machine they now had access to. They used the WordPress web server to ‘pivot’ into the corporate assets and begin their data exfiltration.

Re: The Panama Papers

If you're gonna do WP, you have to spend much extra time on security.

Re: The Panama Papers

Yes. I won a big strategic political battle today thanks to this, and now I have a policy of all venue sites being static, pre-generated HTML.

So, mixed feelings on this whole Panama Papers thing...

I was actually surprised to see WP in your stable to begin with this far along in the game. Figured it was politics you didn't have time to fight.

Re: The Panama Papers

I've inherited a lot of sites from mergers and acquisitions where I couldn't control the architecture from the start because I wasn't involved from the start. So I have Expression Engine sites and Wordpress sites and all kinds of things. Obviously this whole Panama Papers thing seals the deal with my whole pre-generated, static HTML initiative. Like Movable Type, like the original CoolJunkie.

Re: The Panama Papers

Oh and also: If you hire any digital agency for six figures to build a web site then you're going to end up with a Wordpress site. Par for the course.

Re: The Panama Papers

Fired a digital agency recently with a name that rhymes with Broxperiences For Brokind. They did less than that. I call them HEFM. Horrible...
