ID to vote?

Can someone explain to me why this is an issue? I have to show ID to get on a plane or to buy Sudafed. Why shouldn't I have to show ID to vote?

I hear the left side talking about how it's an attack on minorities and it may well be but......come on.....shouldn't everyone have a fucking picture ID?

They are complaining that a gun permit will be acceptable in Texas but a school ID will not be acceptable. Makes sense to me. A gun permit is issued by the State after a background check and identity verification. A school ID is not State issued and doesn't even have an address on it.

It always bothers me that I walk into my polling place and say a name and they hand me a ballot. Rebecca's name is still on the voter rolls here and, had I been so inclined, I could have brought someone with me to vote in her name in the primary. How can it be right that it's that easy to commit fraud?

Now, I do get that there is not widespread voter fraud happening so I agree that this is a solution looking for a problem. But, I just don't think it's necessary to wait until it's a huge problem to fix something that seems to be open to fraud.

What am I missing?

Re: ID to vote?

Dade, when I vote down here, they ask for my voter registration card. It says my name, voter number 123456789-22828 or whatever, Libertarian Party of Florida, and current physical address, as well as the voting districts, etc...

To get that card, I filled out a form at the DMV when I updated my Florida license after my exile. Basically they just used my verified information from my DL renewal application as the basis for my voter registration. And for that (as you know) I had to show two official forms of current address (a lease and a power bill sufficed) as well as a current government-issued ID (my passport) and something official with my SSN on it (W-4 form).

It was actually pretty time-consuming to get all that together.

I'm guessing by the tone of your post it's a little more relaxed in NH?

Yeah. I go to the local middle school, tell them my name, they look it up on the guest list, cross it off and hand me my ballot.

Oh wow. Maybe NH just trusts their voters a little more.

You don't have to be a driver to get an ID card.

Re: ID to vote?

I think the point is that some people cannot afford the time and/or money for the appropriate ID.

Also, the point is FUCK YOU. We are not a fucking police state. There is no proof that voter fraud is any sort of problem in this country. Stop capitulating to whatever indecency the government wants to visit upon you just because you cannot think of a good reason not to. FUCK YOU is a good enough reason to resist the government's removal of your rights. You have to guard ALL your rights jealously, even the ones that do not seem important, or you will soon find that you have lost more than you believed possible.

(BTW, that FUCK YOU is to the government, not to the posters here.)

The right-wing should be so ashamed of themselves for trying to pull this bullshit off. And that is how you know it IS purposeful voter intimidation, because they CLAIM to be the small-government-individual-rights party, while taking away our rights. Seriously, this sounds like something the socialist-big-governement-regulation left would come up with, but nope, it's the supposedly libertarian right. Totall bullshit.
