More American Expatriates Give Up Citizenship

This article just scratches the surface, but reveals an alarming trend to come in the next few years. I've been saying it for a while now, the best and brightest see no point in being an American anymore. Our best days are behind us. The opportunities are gone. Bankers and corporations control the government. Entrepreneurship today means opening a business.....in another country. I'm seeing this at the bank, I'm seeing this with friends, and even considering it myself (having already received citizenship abroad).

And now, to my surprise, even the NY Times is seeing it.....

I know a few TNL's have left the country. Anyone else giving it serious thought?

Are we allowed to refer to you as officially "un-patriotic" yet?

Masters don't give orders;
they work with everybody else.
When the job is done, people are amazed
at what they have accomplished.

Re: More American Expatriates Give Up Citizenship

My god that article was complete and utter bullshit.

For every person those leaves the US, ten are lining up to get in. These are people who currently live over seas. Of course after living in another country for ten years you probably like it and maybe want to stay there, so why pay more in taxes? This has nothing to do with this country falling apart. It's people who want to save some money.

Love this line:
“It’s taxation without representation,” she added.

LOL, what an idiot. You were born and raised in the US, you were educated in the US, the US have provided so much to you. You are successful because of this country. And if your Euro trash country collapses you'll be first in line begging the Marines at the consultant to let you get out, you are an American after all... Everyone hates the US until they need us.

Fuck off to those who want to renounce their citizenship. American is stronger for you leaving. We have elections in 4 months, Obama is going to have to abandon his far left lunacy. Also what is the tax rate in Europe? Something like 60%?

So it's too hard to start a business? Dade has Goldman Sach ruined your Wedding business? Ryan, did Google put you out of business? Pod, has Kodak killed your photog business? JMT did Home depot put an end to your job?

SS you are a crack pot. 500 people doesn't make an army. America will recover, we always do. S Florida is filled with British people. I just went to wedding filled with Scots.

If you play the game, you can have a real low tax rate if you work overseas. Ask Eddy how he's managing his Thailand money.

This is true. You neglected, however, to mention a couple of things that are important when having this conversation....

The people who are leaving are taking a lot of money with them. Those people who are trying to get in are doing so in the hopes of making money to send back home.

Re: More American Expatriates Give Up Citizenship

While we left overseas for a very generous opportunity, I have zero intentions to ever give up my citizenship, it allows me the freedom to travel, return to the USA when I want, and honestly - why would I ?

This article is retarded and totally agree with Dade, ton of people come to the USA for the chance to make their lives better (and some even risk their own lives like Cuban and Mexican people).

I don't think he was putting it this way. More like rich people leaving and only poor people coming in. For every rich person that leaves with their money, we get a lot of poor people coming in without much to contribue economically.

Re: More American Expatriates Give Up Citizenship

right, and instead of looking for ways to cut back a massively bloated government, they will just invent new ways to tax the citizens more, just like the VAT idea that's been floating around recently. that's the whole issue here.

Re: More American Expatriates Give Up Citizenship

What happens when the economy comes roaring back? Are those people going to try and become citizens again? What happens if Greece and Spain collapse, will they suddenly get nervous and try and become citizens again? What happens when the US smacks around tax havens? Yes we have that power. We can issue arrest warrants which means they are figuratively and literally stuck on an Island in the Caribbean. They can't go to any country we have a treaty with. A la Roman Polansky. Ever see Blow, it happened, in real life. How about UBS, we the US forced them to violate their centuries old banking laws.

Last year it was the dollar is done for oil trading, then Russian proff declaring the US will break up. China was arrogant now they are really really quiet, wanna know why? Their economy is on the verge of a night mare.

Once Nov comes, this country will start turning around. Clinton had to go center once Newt took over and Obama will have to do the same. He knows he has 6 months left of a majority after that the dude is a lame duck with his far left lunacy.

Don't eve bet against American and don't be an alarmist. Presidents have very little control over the economy.
