[META] - Talknightlife Proposals For The Future

Hey gang,

I'm thinking of moving a few things around on here, most of which could change the overall user experience here.

That being said, at the risk of sounding like a sappy asshole, this is your forum as much as it is mine, so to keep it on an even keel, I'm going to put it out there for discussion. Some of these are technical-features, so it might get a little geeky.

• The biggie - advertising - I don't plan on using your emails for anything. It won't accomplish much besides making me have to wear body armor when I leave the PodPlex. We have slots for banner ads. The ads are usually in kind, civic, or I've only gotten booze money out of 'em. Would you guys object to actual advertisers in there? Like, if I were to solicit a company that is in line with our lifestyle and tastes, would that be alright? For example, if the top banner ad had Revo Sunglasses in there...as an example, I don't know anyone at Revo.

• As a corollary to advertising - Google AdSense bar somewhere? Basically you'd see Google ads somewhere on the site.

• Forum software switch. phpBB is old and isn't really mobile-friendly. Tech did some amazing things in 2007 to coax it into some sort of mobile-friendly mode, but compared to the way responsive sites act nowadays, it's pretty quaint. Try posting from your iPhone...

• Outgoing social media integration - aka "share buttons". Click a button and share content from here on FB, Twitter, etc...

Added 2014-03-19 - ugly but it works.

• Incoming social media integration - I loath the idea but what do you guys really think about enabling "Log In With Facebook" authentication?

• A blog section just to draw traffic? The articles would just be bullshit but there'd be traffic.

An attempt at a TNL Senate.

I think that anything new should be added on top of what's already here instead of a big change.

Yes, because a major change would hose our SEO for a bit, right?

Not so sure about the Facebook integration thing...one of the cool things about this site is that it's somewhat "Anonymous"

Yes - that's how I feel.

However, if I were to hook up FB Connect, I would leave the option to do things the normal way in place.

Not a bad idea then. And Google ads? you should have added them years ago. with all the lurkers on this place you can make some fuel money.

Yes, finally. I totally think this is a great idea, as long as it is not pop-ups. Honestly, I don't even mind in-line ads.

No problemo. Let me know if you are more successful than I am in getting it to target right. We get some wack, utterly unrelated ads on our site and I know that is hurting the little revenue we get from it.

Yes, yes, yes.

pod wrote:• Outgoing social media integration - aka "share buttons". Click a button and share content from here on FB, Twitter, etc...

I don't mind either way. I usually do not use share buttons, prefering to copy the URL, which I already do. But, adding them won't detract from the experience, I'm sure.

pod wrote:• Incoming social media integration - I loath the idea but what do you guys really think about enabling "Log In With Facebook" authentication?

That's fine, as long as it is optional. I like the quasi-anonymity that I have here, where I can blast on people without worrying much about ruining relationships. So, I won't use it, but for other people, I'm sure it would be nice.

I think this is a good idea. What about integrating the photos more into the site, instead of separately. Wouldn't that drive more traffic, as well?

I don't know what it is, but it sounds hilarious.

pod - my only suggestion, and i understand why it probably is how it is, would be for the thumbnails on the side that link to the galleries to not show half naked women.

reason being is that sometimes i'll log in from work to read/make some posts and i don't want people to think i'm possibly on some random porn website when they walk past my PC lol.

that being said, having a cutie dancer from space in her bra on the side does make people more prone to clicking the gallery, so i do get it.

YES YES YES
The FB thing I am also not so sure about, in one way it might help but you know with popularity comes a cesspool factor. Just saying...
