Promoting questions

I am New here, been looking at the forum for a while, thinking about different ways people do promoting so I wanted to ask a couple of questions. They are probably super noob questions but please don't tear me apart, tryng to learn how the biz works (at least down here in South FL.)

Is it a common practice to use SMS?

When you hand your list to a club, does it only include names will the club require me to hand over all the info?

How do i get credit for the people i brought? Do i have to be there to count them?

If I bring someone in for a bottle service, what is a decent commission? and do i get a commission for all the bottles they order that night?

IHow should i roganize my guest list?

Thanks

Re: Promoting questions

Good questions:

It is not really common to use SMS. Some promoters do, but everybody I know hates receiving them.

When you hand the list to the club, it should have first and last name. The rest kind of depends on the club, but really all they need is the names.

If the club lets you stand out front and count them, that is good, but I don't know many clubs that will do that. When you hand them your guest list, put in a box for them to check off, that way, they can check them off as they come in. Yeah, a lot of trust there.

You should get credit for all the bottles they order. Ask the club about commission, but don't take them at their first offer. The thing is, you have to show you have some chops before you can start really asking for a big commission. Once you start bringing in a lot of bottle buyers, you will be able to ask for more commission.

Most people organize them by first name, some by last name. Ask the club.

Re: Promoting questions

Thanks!

BTW, how would i go about a friend wanting a table reservation? I am guessing it is not like a restaurant.

And BTW are their promotion companies you can join? or do people just work independently?

Re: Promoting questions

Don't use SMS people will have your head. I can't stand getting those texts.

When I submit guest list, I put full names plus the amount of people coming with that person. I sort them alphabetical order by first name.

I suggest getting in good with whoever does the list because that is the person that controls your livelihood. It also helps in the end if some people run late, you can usually have a little leeway if your friends with who does the list.

I suggest trying to greet all your guests once they are in. It's nice to put a face to a name and this will make them come back to you because they feel they can trust.

When I started I got 10% of every bottle sold. Keep track of your tables and stop by every now and then to see how many bottles they have bought. Again, it is good to show face. You make the customer feel good and shows you appreciate the business.

I submit my reservations directly through the VIP host who handles the tables. I send in the full name and my name goes next to it. Again this is another person to befriend because it helps out when you can get the better tables in the club for your guests. I like to do this a lot.

Most people down here work independently.

Hope that helps.

Where are you promoting? Are you looking for a spot?

Re: Promoting questions

I am not actually promoting. (at least now) but I am very intrested in the mechanics. I work with software and was considering building a (free & for iOS and android) app that helps promoters quickly organize list for events, manage their contacts and send them in (or to themselves for printing).

I though a good approach would be to learn about the biz myself and even consider first hand experience.

So any insight on what are common issues or tedious task would be great.

Feel free to give feedback, I wont be offended, it will actually help build something that is useful or at least prevent the creation of something useless.

Re: Promoting questions

Oh lord... a guestlist app. We've been over this quite a lot.

I think your idea of getting some first hand experiene is beyond wise. Best idea ever. Do some promoting for a year or 6 months, then see. Talk to some promoters and see if they want an app. See what they want in an app.

Re: Promoting questions

Coach: I know there are plenty of guest list apps, but that is not what I am aiming for. It is more of a CRM tailored for promoters. I will definetly be talking to promoters.

Lenny, that is a great point. Thanks!

Techjunkie. Monetizing would probably come later with by-products or premium features. But the intention is to create something useful first then see what features or additions could be added on to (not taking away from existing). I am not a fan of in app advertising either so won't go that route.
And the data needs to be owned by the user, portable so if he wants to pull it out of the app he can.

How long did it take you to figure out how you wanted to approach this thread?

Goose, I will say what nobody here want to say.....

Give up the app idea. It's been done and there are many products in the marketplace to do what you're talking about. Some are free. Others are paid systems. It's not going to make you money. Go out and have fun. Stay away from the promoting business. Finish school and get a real job.
